In an exclusive conversation with Face Magazine, Prajakta Koli reflects on her incredible journey from being a content creator on YouTube to making waves in Bollywood. With a career spanning digital content, social impact, and mainstream cinema, she continues to evolve as a storyteller and performer.
The Journey from Digital to Mainstream Entertainment
Prajakta’s evolution from filming in her bedroom to starring in big-screen productions has been nothing short of extraordinary. She credits much of her growth to the dynamic nature of digital platforms and the ever-evolving audience.
“When I started, it was just me, my camera, and my room. I edited my own videos and uploaded them weekly, which later became three times a week. Over time, I built a team of videographers, editors, and photographers, and my content expanded to include socially relevant topics like mental health, girls’ education, and climate action,” she shares.
Her first major step into storytelling came with Khayali Pulao, a short film that received immense love from the audience. This gave her the confidence to explore long-form storytelling, leading to Mismatched, which she describes as a “game-changer.” From there, she landed roles in Jugjugg Jeeyo and Neeyat, marking her transition into mainstream cinema.
Navigating Skepticism in Bollywood
Digital creators often face skepticism when stepping into Bollywood, but Prajakta focused on honing her craft rather than external doubts.
“I was aware of the skepticism around digital creators moving into films, but I didn’t let it affect me. If I was being cast only because of my followers, then I should have cracked every audition—but that’s not how it works. I’ve been auditioning for five years, testing for all kinds of roles in different genres, and I’ve only gotten work when I’ve cleared auditions, just like any other actor,” she explains.
Storytelling & Creative Expression
As she expands her creative horizons, Prajakta admits that she is still discovering her evolution as a storyteller.
“I wish I had a smart answer, but I don’t. I can see the evolution when I zoom out, but since I’m so deep into the process right now, I guess I’ll have to wait a couple of years to reflect on how much has changed.”
Her connection with the youth keeps her content authentic while allowing her to push creative boundaries.
“Listening to my audience has been a game-changer. The best part of putting content on the internet is the instant reaction—you don’t have to wait; you just scroll down and see exactly what your audience is thinking.”
The Impact of Digital Influence
For Prajakta, blending entertainment with social responsibility is a natural part of her journey.
“I don’t see it as a balance—it’s just part of my content. Conversations around mental health, climate action, and body positivity have always been organic. I’ve never been an expert on these topics, but I’ve learned alongside my audience by engaging with people doing incredible work on the ground.”
Transition to Acting & Bollywood Aspirations
Stepping onto a film set for the first time was a completely different experience compared to creating digital content.
“The size and scale of film sets, the number of people involved in every tiny detail—it was overwhelming at first. As an actor, I step in last; everything from writing to pre-production has already been going on for months before I arrive on set. It was nerve-wracking initially, but I’ve been lucky to work with teams that made the transition smooth for me.”
For digital creators aspiring to enter Bollywood, she advises: “Use your platforms as your showcase. Whether you want to act, direct, produce, or design, social media is the best place to display your talent. If you consistently put your work out there, the right opportunities will come to you.”
Social Media, Fame & Mental Well-Being
Navigating the pressures of fame requires clear boundaries, something Prajakta has learned over the years.
“I always make decisions for myself about what to share, but I never make that decision for anyone else in my life without their consent.”
For her, success is measured beyond numbers.
“The Too Good To Be True book tour was a huge eye-opener. Seeing people turn up at signings, telling me this was their first book, or that it helped them get back into reading—those moments mean everything to me.”
The Business of Being a Creator & Collaborations
When it comes to brand collaborations, authenticity is key.
“I try to prioritize collaborations that feel honest and authentic, both to me and my audience.”
The Future of Entertainment & What’s Next for Prajakta Koli
As for the future, Prajakta remains open to possibilities.
“I will be honest, I have no clue! I’m figuring it out as I go.”
Currently, she is diving into new projects post-wedding, working on exciting content, and continuing to expand her creative expression across different mediums.
From digital stardom to mainstream entertainment, Prajakta Koli’s journey is a testament to the power of adaptability, authenticity, and storytelling.
