Poised, grounded, and quietly powerful — Fatima Sana Shaikh embodies the calm revolution that modern Indian cinema has been waiting for. From her breakout performance in Dangal to redefining depth in roles across Ajeeb Daastaans and Modern Love Mumbai, Fatima represents an artist who transforms vulnerability into strength, and stillness into power.
In this exclusive conversation with Face Magazine, Fatima opens up about her journey, her craft, and what it means to stay fearless and authentic in a world that constantly demands more.
Every Role, a Defining Chapter
“Every role has been a defining moment in some way,” Fatima begins thoughtfully. “Dangal definitely shifted things for me—it wasn’t just a film, it was an experience that tested and transformed me.”
From Raat Rani (Modern Love Mumbai) to Metro… In Dino, each project has shaped her evolution. “As an actor, I’ve learned and unlearned something from every film. That process excites me endlessly.”
Choosing Scripts with Heart
Fatima has built a reputation for choosing characters that break stereotypes. “The most beautiful films are those told with honesty. If a script makes me fall in love with my character, that’s a win for me,” she says.
She adds with a smile, “I’d love to do an action film, a hardcore thriller, or even a period piece. Oh, and a love-action film too.”
Emotional Preparation & Letting Go
Known for her emotional depth on screen, Fatima reveals her process is rooted in collaboration. “I rely on my directors—it’s their vision after all. I improvise and add nuances, but once the camera stops, I switch off. I don’t carry characters home. What stays with me is what I learn from them.”
Authenticity in an Age of Appearances
In a time when image often overshadows substance, Fatima’s grounded approach stands out.
“It’s easy to stay authentic when you’re true to yourself. I’m flawed and still learning. I don’t feel the need to be ‘put together’ all the time,” she reflects. “It’s important to have your own voice and protect it at all costs.”
Art, Photography & The Power of Observation
When not acting, Fatima finds solace behind the lens and canvas. “They remind me to observe quietly. Photography trains my eye, and art gives me a sense of escape and reflection,” she says. These creative pursuits, she explains, help her stay connected to her essence.
Fashion as Expression, Not Definition
While she’s often praised for her elegant yet understated fashion, Fatima’s relationship with style is refreshingly personal. “Fashion, for me, is mood-driven. It’s how I express what I can’t say in words. Most days, I’m in a kurta or T-shirt and chappals, but sometimes I love dressing up. Fashion should tell a story, not become a performance.”
Owning Individuality in a World of Molds
“In an industry that loves fitting women into boxes, embracing individuality is a constant process,” Fatima admits. “There were moments of deep insecurity early on, but I’ve learned that my voice matters, even if it’s quiet. Being a silent spectator does no good.”
Mental Health, Balance & Staying Grounded
When asked how she balances fame with self-awareness, Fatima smiles warmly. “My family, brother, friends—and my dog—keep me grounded. Writing, trekking, learning new things without being ‘Fatima Sana Shaikh’ helps me stay sane. Staying connected to my roots gives me perspective.”
Lessons from Legends
Working alongside cinematic greats has shaped her discipline and outlook. “Discipline is everything—I learned that from Kamal Haasan, Aamir Khan, Bachchan sir, and Anil Kapoor. Also, be curious, and don’t take yourself too seriously. My family keeps reminding me that fame fades, but relationships last forever.”
Responsibility Beyond the Screen
Fatima believes in using her influence thoughtfully. “I don’t have all the answers, but I believe in using whatever little platform I have responsibly. Sometimes it means speaking up, and sometimes it means listening. If my journey sparks thought or dialogue, that’s my victory.”
Beyond the Image
Laughing, she dispels a common misconception about her persona: “That I’m always serious or intense! My friends think I’m quite funny. I love bad jokes and can spend hours dancing in my room or doodling.”
The Next Chapter: Fearless
When asked to define her next chapter, she doesn’t hesitate: “Fearless. Not because I don’t feel fear, but because I’m ready to walk through it. Whether it’s in life or cinema, I want to face it head-on—with trust, curiosity, and courage.”
