Tanishk Bagchi: Redefining Bollywood Music with Innovation and Nostalgia

Tanishk Bagchi is a name synonymous with Bollywood’s evolving music landscape. From creating original chartbusters to reimagining classic melodies, he has mastered the art of blending nostalgia with modern sounds. In this exclusive interview with Face Magazine, Tanishk shares his journey, creative process, and future aspirations.

The Journey into Bollywood

Q: Your journey in Bollywood has been extraordinary. What inspired you to pursue music, and how did you break into the industry?

Music has always been an integral part of my life. Coming from a musical family, I was naturally drawn to melodies and compositions. However, breaking into Bollywood wasn’t easy. I started with independent music and honed my craft over the years. My breakthrough came with Banno (Tanu Weds Manu Returns), which became a turning point in my career. From there, things started falling into place, and I got opportunities to work on both original compositions and recreations.

Balancing Innovation and Nostalgia

Q: You’ve seamlessly blended original compositions with recreations of classic hits. How do you strike the right balance between innovation and nostalgia?

That’s always the challenge—respecting the essence of a classic while making it relevant for today’s audience. I don’t just remix a song; I try to reimagine it with a fresh perspective, utilizing modern production techniques and sometimes introducing a completely new melodic twist. The goal is to bring back a nostalgic tune with a contemporary vibe.

Experimenting with Genres

Q: Your ability to experiment with diverse genres, from dance numbers to soulful ballads, is impressive. Is there a particular genre you feel most connected to?

I love all genres, but I have a special connection with melodies. Even in my dance tracks, I ensure there’s a strong melodic hook. That being said, I enjoy experimenting with electronic music, hip-hop, and orchestral arrangements. My goal is always to create something fresh and engaging.

The Debate on Remixes

Q: The industry often debates the trend of remixes and recreations. How do you respond to critics who feel that Bollywood should focus more on original compositions?

I completely respect their perspective, and I believe in maintaining a balance. I have done several original compositions like Raatan Lambiyan, Ve Kamleya, Qaafirana, and many more. However, recreations have their own place. If done tastefully, they revive classic songs for a new generation while bridging the gap between musical eras. I always encourage original music, but I also believe there’s room for both.

Composing vs. Singing

Q: From composing to singing, you wear multiple hats in the industry. Do you see yourself focusing more on one aspect in the future?

I enjoy both! Composing is my foundation, but singing is something I love as well. If a song requires my voice and it fits naturally, I go for it. However, my primary focus will always be creating great music—whether as a composer, producer, or singer.

Musical Influences

Q: Who are your biggest musical influences, both from India and globally?

My biggest inspirations are my parents. From India, I admire legends like Madan Mohan, Salil Chaudhuri, R.D. Burman, A.R. Rahman, and Pritam. Internationally, I look up to Hans Zimmer, Coldplay, and The Chainsmokers. I love how they blend emotions with sound design.

Dream Collaborations

Q: If you could collaborate with any international artist, who would it be and why?

I’d love to collaborate with Ed Sheeran or The Weeknd. Their approach to music is global yet emotionally strong, and I think our styles would create an interesting blend.

Upcoming Projects

Q: Fans are always eager to hear what’s next. Can you share any exciting projects or collaborations in the pipeline?

There’s a lot happening! I’m working on several Bollywood projects and also exploring independent music. A few collaborations are in the works with some amazing artists, and I can’t wait for everyone to hear what’s coming next.

Exploring Independent Music

Q: With the rise of independent music, do you have any plans to explore more independent releases outside Bollywood?

Absolutely! Independent music offers immense creative freedom, and I love experimenting without any restrictions. I’ve already begun exploring this space, and you’ll hear more independent releases from me soon.

Advice for Aspiring Musicians

Q: What advice would you give to aspiring composers and singers trying to make their mark in the industry?

Keep working on your craft, be original, and don’t get discouraged by setbacks. The industry is dynamic, and social media provides great exposure for unique music. Most importantly, be patient—success doesn’t come overnight.
