Making her way to everyone’s playlist and hearts is the magical voice behind songs like Jugnu, Nach meri raani, Burj Khalifa, Naaja naaja and many more – Nikhita Gandhi.

FACE’s Managing Editor Neha Sachar Mittal caught up with the spirited multilingual singer

1) It’s amazing how you are so comfortable with singing in multiple Indian languages? Does your mixed cultural origin have anything to do with it?  the reason for you being Is there a trick or two that you would like to share with our readers about acing multilingual singing?

I’m not sure if being a Benjabi gave me any special powers but I think it’s just how you approach your craft. To me singing a song in a different language is like acting cause I get to play a character who speaks and emotes in her language! So it’s all perspective and I’ve been an Odissi dancer too so I think the expression is something that was always intrinsic to me as a kid.

2) Is it true that you were discovered by none other than the living legend A.R Rehman sir? How did that feel? Were you all nervous working with him?

Yes, it’s true. You got me! The jig is up! Hehe I don’t think I ever let any of it sink in. I just took things as they came my way, be it the first recording I did for him, the first time I met Sir or the time he told me that I’m a singer, not a dentist 😂. He has been a monumental influence in my life’s trajectory and I don’t know what I’d be doing today if I hadn’t met Sir! I was pretty normal when I met him actually, nervous from the inside but I was playing it cool haha.

3) Your song with Badshah – ‘Jugnu’ is a chart-topper and a smashing hit! Your latest drop – ‘She’s on fire’ from Dhakkad is also out… What is it like working with a hit machine like him?

Pretty cool! He’s very chill and very hard working! He doesn’t waste time and gets straight to work and I love that!

4) Live shows or in-studio recording…what is more of your scene?

Love both! Can’t compare. I love the precision that goes into a session! The perfectionist in me Really gets her heart filled! And speaking of full hearts, nothing quite compares to the rush and joy of being on stage and sharing energies with a live audience!

5) Due to so many reality shows that encourage fresh talent, the singing industry is getting a bit crowded. In a situation like this, how do you make yourself stand out?

I’ve never really thought of all that. I don’t think I’ve ever tried to “make” myself stand out! I just do what I know and give my best each day!

6) What’s your secret to singing in so many languages?

Dal makhni

7) Any pro tips for the young and budding singers among our readers?

Just be original. No one does you better than you ♥️
