NEO-NOMADS: STORIES WORN IN MOTION

There is a growing tendency in contemporary fashion to speak of heritage as though it were a resource to be mined-an aesthetic archive waiting to be translated into something commercially palatable. Yet the most compelling designers understand that heritage is not a trend. It is a living language.

In this exclusive Face Magazine review, Editor-in-Chief Harshit Hundet explores Neo-Nomads, the latest collection from Stylehive Founder and Creative Director Anusha Bikumala, where traditional craftsmanship, cultural storytelling and contemporary design come together in a confident expression of modern fashion.

Subtitled Stories Worn in Motion, the collection is an exploration of identity carried through craft—of traditions that travel, adapt and evolve without ever losing sight of their origins. Across six meticulously developed looks, Bikumala constructs a visual narrative rooted in nomadic and tribal influences while remaining distinctly modern in its execution.

The result is not merely a collection of garments. It is a conversation between movement and memory.

“Fashion does not always need to announce itself. Sometimes its most powerful statement is the quiet confidence of knowing exactly where it comes from.”

Fashion Beyond Geography

The philosophical foundation of Neo-Nomads is built around five defining principles: Wander. Adapt. Gather. Express. Belong.

These words function as more than thematic signposts. They reveal the collection’s deeper intention: to explore how cultural identity exists beyond fixed boundaries. Nomadic traditions throughout history have carried stories, symbols and craftsmanship across landscapes, and Bikumala draws upon this spirit of movement to create clothing that feels both rooted and fluid.

Rather than reproducing traditional aesthetics, she interprets them through contemporary silhouettes and sustainable materials, allowing heritage to evolve rather than remain static.

This distinction is important. Many collections reference culture. Few genuinely engage with it.

The Language of Craft

At the heart of Neo-Nomads lies an unwavering commitment to handcrafted processes. Organic cotton, handloom textiles, block printing, crochet detailing and adjustable drawstring constructions create a cohesive material vocabulary throughout the collection.

The craftsmanship never feels decorative. Instead, it forms the structural identity of every piece.

Crochet ring tassels appear repeatedly as a subtle signature, while hand block-printed motifs introduce rhythm and imperfection—the kind of imperfection that reminds us a human hand was involved in the making.

In an era increasingly dominated by automation and accelerated production cycles, this commitment to tactile authenticity feels refreshing.

The collection asks the viewer to slow down. And that may be its most radical gesture.

Colour as Narrative

One of the collection’s strongest achievements is its understanding of colour as storytelling.

The opening look establishes an immediate sense of warmth through a vibrant red organic cotton crop top layered beneath a cream crochet vest, paired with a block-printed maxi skirt alive with playful motifs and a striking tri-colour border.

Elsewhere, rich purples converse with monochromatic handloom surfaces, earthy terracotta tones meet verdant green accents, and vibrant fuchsia injects moments of celebration and joy.

The palette never feels arbitrary. Each colour appears connected to the natural world, echoing landscapes, seasons and traditional dyeing practices that have informed textile cultures for generations. Bikumala uses colour not as embellishment, but as emotion.

The Poetry of Movement

Fashion ultimately reveals itself through motion. This is where Neo-Nomads truly excels. The handloom fabrics breathe. The skirts respond to movement with an ease that synthetic materials rarely achieve. Crochet details sway naturally. Drawstrings create fluidity rather than restriction. The accompanying riverside imagery captures this beautifully.Set against an organic landscape of water, grass and open sky, the garments are allowed to exist within an environment that mirrors their own qualities- natural, unhurried and deeply connected to materiality.

The photographs understand that these clothes are not objects to be observed. They are garments intended to be lived in.

Editorial Perspective

What makes Neo-Nomads particularly successful is its refusal to confuse reference with meaning. The tribal and nomadic influences informing the collection have clearly been researched, understood and translated with care. They are neither exoticised nor reduced to surface decoration. Instead, they become part of a broader dialogue about sustainability, cultural continuity and contemporary identity.

Equally impressive is the consistency of the collection’s design language. Every look speaks to the next through recurring materials, motifs and construction techniques. This coherence demonstrates creative discipline—an increasingly rare quality in an industry often driven by constant reinvention. If there is a challenge for future collections, it lies in expansion rather than refinement. The textile intelligence displayed throughout Neo-Nomads deserves exploration across a wider range of silhouettes and garment categories. One senses that this visual language has much more territory to cover.

That, however, is less a criticism than an invitation.Because Neo-Nomads already succeeds on its own terms. It presents a clear point of view, a thoughtful design philosophy and a genuine respect for craftsmanship. And in today’s fashion landscape, clarity of vision remains one of the most valuable luxuries a designer can possess.

“Neo-Nomads does not attempt to modernise Indian craft for global approval. Instead, it allows craft to speak confidently in its own voice—and trusts the world to listen.”
